Get Back

November 20, 2012

A large part of the concept for the Habit album was to capture the recording style of the 1970’s. I am a big fan of disco and funk from that era because back in that day, (so I’m told) every sound was made by a musician not a machine. Those cats were total bad-asses because there wasn’t a whole lot of punching in and cutting and pasting on their tracks. You just had to bring it live in your take. That is what Organica is all about.

I am honored to have the Coakley brothers on this recording and on a lot of the tracks on my album. The brothers are Kirkwood (bass) and Theophilus Coakley (keys) from that famous 70’s funk band, T-Connection.  If that didn’t legitimize this tune I don’t know what else could. Lyrically, the song is about having a nasty disagreement with someone and the shame that follows for not taking the high road. “Blame is just a game, that nobody wins” and how we’ve gotta “Get Back” to a better place by washing away the sins of trying to be right instead of kind. This track was also my first attempt at writing string parts. I really wanted that fabulous melodramatic sound of those popular 70s shows Charlie’s Angels andLove Boat. My dear friend, drummer and collaborator, Chris Wabich, had so much fun conceptualizing this song. We even brought in a middle-eastern Daf drum, which believe it or not enhanced the sound of our clapping hands. Let me know if you can hear it!

Peace, Love & Organica,
